Finance meets AI

Sam Altman Insults Interviewers When Asked Financial Questions

I have lately noticed that Sam Altman dislikes being asked financial questions.

The most extreme case is when he says to Harry Stebbings that “this is the most boring question I can imagine”, when he is being asked about the economics of the LLMs.

When the MIT President, Sally Kornbluth, asks him about how “AI will impact the financial sector”, Altman avoids answering and suggests passing the baton to the audience.

An equally awkward moment occurs when Ravi Belani from Stanford asks Sam Altman about the profit, non-profit nature of OpenAI, and he suggests they go back to students. The video is cut and Ravi Belani appears frustrated after this. We do not know what the cut-out part is about, but possibly has to do with Altman’s reaction.

An explanation for this avoidance might be that Altman is not particularly interested in money, or that he is not well-versed in finance and feels uncomfortable.

However, one might speculate that any inquiry about finance could prompt scrutiny regarding OpenAI’s initial non-profit and open-source goals, given its transformation into a for-profit entity with proprietary models.
